Green-background number plates to be issued for electric vehicles

The Department of Motor Traffic states that steps have been taken to issue number plates with a green background for all electric motor vehicles.

The Commissioner General of the Department, Air Vice Marshal (Retired) Thushara Fernando, stated that approximately 8,000 green-background number plates have been printed so far.

Thushara Fernando said that the decision to issue green-background number plates for electric vehicles was taken following a directive from the Ministry of Transport.

The Commissioner General further noted that the relevant notification has already been forwarded for publication in the Gazette, and that the Inspector General of Police (IGP) has been requested to inform all police stations that the green-background number plates are legally valid.
