How to Renew an Expired Driving License in Sri Lanka
In the past, once you obtained a driving license, it was valid for life. But after 2009, every license must be renewed every 8 years. While it may feel like a hassle, driving without a valid license is illegal. Today, MotorGuide explains how you can renew your expired driving license step by step without stress.
Required Documents
- A valid and clear National Identity Card or Passport
- The expired driving license
- A police certificate (if the driving license is lost)
- A medical certificate issued by the National Transport Medical Institute
How to Obtain the Medical Certificate
A medical certificate is mandatory when renewing your driving license. This certificate can only be obtained from the National Transport Medical Institute (NTMI). These institutes are available across Sri Lanka, so you can visit the nearest one to you. Once you complete the medical examination, you will receive the required certificate.
Booking a Date at the RMV
Once you have your medical certificate, the next step is to reserve a date and time at the RMV. You can choose the nearest District Motor Vehicles Department office. To book:

Renewing Your Driving License
On your appointment date, visit the RMV with all the required documents. At the main gate, confirm your booking by showing the SMS confirmation. After that, proceed to Hall H, where the process is carried out across three counters.
The First Counter
At the first counter, submit your medical certificate, old license, and NIC. Then, your photo, fingerprint, and signature will be captured. You will be given a printed application form with your details. This form has six sections (A–F). Fill it out carefully and proceed to the next step.
The Second and Third Counters
At the second counter, your details will be computerized. Then you will be directed to the accounts section, where you must pay the renewal fee. Once the payment is made, your old license will be punched, and a new license will be issued in your name.
Due to the shortage of license cards, the new driving license may currently be issued on an A4 sheet, valid for one year. It serves as your official driving license until the plastic card is available.
