When driving on the road, you’ll often encounter different lanes. Sometimes, drivers are unsure about which lane they should use. To avoid confusion and ensure safe driving, it’s important to understand the lane rule. MotorGuide explains how to use lanes correctly when driving.

Traveling in a Lane

When driving in a specific lane, you must generally keep to the left side, except when overtaking another vehicle or turning right. Always make sure not to switch lanes in a way that interferes with other vehicles.

On roads with three or more lanes going in the same direction, vehicles can use all lanes except the one closest to the median (which is often reserved for right turns and overtaking). Additionally, bus lanes are reserved exclusively for buses during operating hours, so other vehicles should not use them at those times.

Two-Lane Roads

Most roads in Sri Lanka are two-lane roads. These lanes are divided as follows:

  • Lane 01: The lane closest to the sidewalk. It is used by vehicles turning left, stopping, or traveling at lower speeds.
  • Lane 02: The lane closest to the median line. It is used for vehicles overtaking or turning right.

Three-Lane Roads

Three-lane roads are more common in suburban areas. The usage is divided as follows:

  • Lane 01: Closest to the pedestrian platform or sidewalk. Used by vehicles turning left, stopping, or moving at slower speeds.
  • Lane 02: The middle lane. Primarily for vehicles going straight at normal speed.
  • Lane 03: The lane closest to the median. Reserved for vehicles turning right or overtaking.

Understanding the lane rule is essential for safe and smooth driving. By staying in the correct lane, using lanes properly for turns or overtaking, and respecting bus lanes, you not only reduce the risk of accidents but also make driving easier for yourself and others. Always drive with awareness of your direction, speed, and stopping points to ensure road safety.

FAQs About Lane Rules

What happens if I don’t follow the lane rule?

Failing to follow the lane rule can cause accidents, traffic congestion, or even result in fines from traffic authorities.

Can slow vehicles use the right lane?

No. Slow-moving vehicles should stay in the left lane (Lane 01) to avoid obstructing traffic flow.

Are bus lanes always restricted?

No. Bus lanes are only restricted during specific operating hours. Outside of these times, other vehicles may be allowed to use them.
