How Do I Fill Out the Documents for a Vehicle Transfer?

You may need to sell your current vehicle either to buy a new one or for other personal reasons. When selling a vehicle, you must transfer the ownership to the buyer. This process requires filling out specific forms provided by the Department of Motor Traffic. Today, MotorGuide explains exactly how to fill out these applications for a smooth and accurate transfer.
First Page of the MTA 6 Form
The first page of the MTA 6 form includes the procedures to be followed when transferring the ownership of a motor vehicle. The following page lists the required documents for the transfer (we have discussed these earlier).
Important points to remember:
- Do not use typescripts or erase errors when filling out the form.
- Always use English capital letters, one letter per box.
- Do not use Sinhala language when filling out the form.
- The first copy after these pages is the copy of the Motor Commissioner.
First Application (Copy of the Motor Commissioner)
Let’s look at how to fill in the Commissioner’s copy of the MTA 6 form. The top box is for office use only—do not fill it in. Here’s what you need to complete:
- Date: Enter the date, month, and year of transfer. This should be the date you hand over the form to the institution.
- Name of Transferor: Enter the name of the person listed in the vehicle registration book (current owner).
- Address of Transferor: Enter the address of the person listed in the registration book.
- Vehicle Number: Enter the registered number of the vehicle.
- Name of Transferee: Enter the name of the buyer who is taking over the vehicle.
- Address of Transferee: Enter the address of the buyer.
- Signatures: Both the transferor (seller) and transferee (buyer) must sign, along with their National Identity Card (NIC) numbers.
- Witness: Anyone with a valid NIC can sign as a witness, along with their address and NIC number.
There are four such sheets in the MTA 6 form, and each must be filled out in the same way.
Second Application (Form C – Commissioner’s Copy)
The next form is known as Form C, which is also a copy of the Commissioner of Motor Vehicles. Here’s how to fill it:
- Enter the name as mentioned in the vehicle registration book.
- Enter the name of the new owner (transferee).
- Provide the address where the updated registration book should be sent.
- Mention the city and vehicle number.
- Specify the way the vehicle is used (private, commercial, etc.).
- Enter the relevant Regional Registry Office and District.
There is another copy of this sheet, and it should also be filled in the same way.
This is how to fill out the required applications for a motor vehicle ownership transfer. If you complete the forms carefully and with attention to detail, the transfer process can be completed quickly and accurately without any difficulty.
