Whether you’re applying for a new driving license or renewing your existing one, one essential document you’ll need is a medical certificate. This certificate ensures that you’re medically fit to drive. Many people find this process time-consuming, but if you know the correct steps, you can get it done quickly and efficiently. Here’s a simple guide from MotorGuide on how to get your medical certificate for a driving license without unnecessary delays.

What Are the Required Documents?

To obtain a medical certificate, you must bring a few key documents:

  • Your National Identity Card (NIC) or a valid passport.
  • If you are renewing your license, bring your current driving license.

Having all these documents ready will make the process smoother and save you time at the counter.

Can You Make an Appointment in Advance?

Yes, you can! To avoid long queues, it’s best to book an appointment before visiting. You can make an appointment by calling 225 (from a mobile phone) or 1225 (from a landline). This service connects you to the National Transport Medical Institute (NTMI) head office in Nugegoda or any of its branches across Sri Lanka. You can select a convenient date and time to visit, ensuring a faster and more organized experience.

Step-by-Step Process to Get the Medical Certificate

1. Getting a Number

Once you arrive at the NTMI, visit the “Getting a Number” counter and present your ID. The staff will issue you a token with your photo. This token is used throughout the process, so keep it safe.

2. Measure Your Height and Weight

Next, head to the measurement section, where your height and weight will be recorded. These details are added to your token, which you’ll hand back to the staff before moving to the next step.

3. Registration

Go to Counter 04 (Registration) with your token and ID. Here, your details will be verified and entered into the system.

4. Payment at the Cashier

After registration, proceed to Counter 05 (Cashier) to make the payment. Note that the fees differ depending on whether you’re applying for a light vehicle or heavy vehicle license.

5. Laboratory Tests

Next, go to Counter 06 (Laboratory), where your blood sugar level and blood group will be checked. These tests are quick and form part of the medical assessment.

6. Medical Examination

After the lab tests, go upstairs to the Medical Examination Section on the first floor. Around 10 doctors are stationed here to speed up the process. Your name or token number will appear on the screen, indicating which room you should visit. After your examination, wait in the seating area for your report to be printed and handed over.

Receiving Your Medical Report

Once the examination is complete, you’ll receive your medical certificate, confirming that you’ve passed the health assessment. You can then use this certificate when applying for or renewing your driving license. If you need more information, you can call 0714 553 991 for assistance.

Other Convenient Locations

If you can’t visit the National Transport Medical Institute in Nugegoda, don’t worry — there are several branches across the country where you can get your medical certificate. Choose the one closest to you for convenience.

Now that you know the entire process, getting your medical certificate for a driving license will be faster and easier. Prepare your documents, book your appointment, and follow these steps to complete everything smoothly.
