Today, we are going to talk about one of the most important parts of a vehicle, yet one that many people tend to overlook: "Tyres." When driving a vehicle in a country like Sri Lanka, especially with the current expanding expressway network, choosing the correct tire is a decision directly linked to your life. As Motor Guide, using our experience in the field, we will explain exactly how to select the best tyres for Sri Lanka roads.

First, let's consider the road conditions in Sri Lanka. Our country has a mixed road condition. While there are carpeted roads in urban areas, rural roads are often full of stones, gravel, and potholes. Additionally, we must account for the high heat and the severe moisture during the rainy season. We need to select a tire that can withstand all these factors. Many people make the mistake of choosing tires based on appearance or the cheapest price. That is a very dangerous practice.

Expressways and Tyre Safety

When driving on Sri Lankan expressways, the pressure exerted on a tire is higher than on a normal road. When you travel at speeds of 100 km/h, high heat is generated due to the friction between the tire and the road. If you are using old or low-quality tires, this heat causes the air inside the tire to expand, significantly increasing the risk of a "Tyre Burst."

When looking for expressway tyre recommendations, you must check the Speed Rating and Load Index. The letters like "H", "V", or "W" stamped on the sidewall of the tire indicate the maximum speed the tire can safely sustain.

Tyre Speed Rating and Load Index Chart

For Sri Lankan expressways, it is most suitable to choose tires with at least an "H" (210 km/h) or "V" (240 km/h) rating. This is because the stability of the tire at high speeds depends on these technical specifications.

Tyre Types Suitable for Sri Lankan Climate

Since ours is a tropical country, we must be careful about the Rubber Compound of the tire. "Soft Compound" tires made for certain European countries wear out quickly on Sri Lanka's hot tar roads. Therefore, choosing Hard Compound or Medium Compound tires suitable for tropical zones like ours allows for longer usage.

The other important factor is rain. When it rains heavily in Sri Lanka, water accumulates on the roads. At these times, a condition called "Hydroplaning" can occur. This means the tire slides over a layer of water without touching the road. To prevent this, the tire grooves must be efficient. Tires with a Directional Tread Pattern are very safe for driving on rainy days. This is a crucial aspect of any comprehensive car tyre guide Sri Lanka.

Manufacturing Date (DOT Number)

Tyre DOT Number Manufacturing Date

This is a place where many people get deceived when buying new tires. Even if a tire looks new, if it has been stored for years after manufacture, the quality of the rubber degrades. There is a four-digit number inside a box on the tire sidewall (e.g., 1224). This means it was manufactured in the 12th week of the year 2024. Always remember to buy tires that are not older than a year. Old tires have a higher chance of cracking when used on expressways.

How to Maintain Tyres Correctly?

Even if you install the best brand of tires, it is useless if you do not maintain them properly.

Air Pressure (Tyre Pressure)
Check your tire pressure at least once a week. If you frequently travel on the expressway, use Nitrogen for your tires. Nitrogen significantly controls the heating of the tire.

Wheel Alignment and Balancing
Check alignment every 5,000 km or 8,000 km. When hitting potholes on the road, these settings change. This causes the tire to start wearing unevenly.

Tyre Rotation
Swapping the front and rear tires allows all four to wear down evenly.

Motor Guide Advice

Looking at popular brands in the Sri Lankan market, names like Michelin, Bridgestone, and Continental are high in quality, though the price is a bit higher. However, mid-range but good quality brands like Dunlop, Yokohama, or Maxxis are also suitable for our roads. If the "Traction" and "Temperature" ratings of the tire you choose are at "A" level, that is excellent.

If a vehicle's engine gives trouble, the vehicle stops; but if a tire gives trouble, you lose control of the vehicle. Therefore, do not install inferior tires just to save a few rupees. The safety of you and your family rests on those four rubber wheels.
