Owning a vehicle is a dream for many—whether it’s a car, van, or cab. But once that dream comes true, it’s just as important to know how to drive properly. When buying a vehicle, you can choose between an automatic or manual transmission. While many modern vehicles are automatic, manual vehicles are still popular. Today, MotorGuide explains step by step how to drive a manual vehicle correctly and safely.

Features of a Manual Vehicle

A manual car has three main pedals, plus a handbrake and gear lever:

  • Clutch Pedal – Located on the far left. It connects and disconnects the engine from the wheels, allowing you to change gears.
  • Brake Pedal – In the middle. It slows down or stops the vehicle.
  • Accelerator (Gas Pedal) – On the far right. It increases the speed of the vehicle.
  • Handbrake – Used when parking or keeping the vehicle steady when stopped.
  • Gear Lever – Used to shift between gears as the vehicle gains or reduces speed.

How to Use the Pedals

To drive smoothly, remember the following rules:

  • Always apply the handbrake when the vehicle is stopped.
  • To start, release the handbrake by pressing its button.
  • Step on the clutch fully before engaging the first gear.
  • Only use your left foot for the clutch. Your right foot is for the brake and accelerator—never press both at the same time.

🛞 Using the Steering Wheel

The steering wheel controls the direction of your car. Always sit upright, keep both hands on the wheel, and adjust your position for comfort and visibility. This ensures better control while driving.

Steps to Start Driving

  • Fasten your seat belt.
  • Adjust the driving seat and mirrors for visibility.
  • Ensure the gear lever is in neutral.
  • Start the engine.

Moving Forward

  1. Keep your right foot on the brake after starting.
  2. Press the clutch and shift into first gear.
  3. Check the right-side mirror and use your signal.
  4. Slowly release the clutch until you feel the vehicle vibrate slightly (the “biting point”).
  5. Lower the handbrake and gently press the accelerator.
  6. Release the clutch fully to move forward smoothly.
  7. When changing gears, release the accelerator, press the clutch, shift gears, and then reapply the accelerator.

How to Stop the Vehicle

  1. Check the left-side mirror and ensure the road is clear.
  2. Release the accelerator and gently press the brake to slow down.
  3. Press the clutch and shift into a lower gear (e.g., 2nd gear) as you decelerate.
  4. When coming to a full stop, press the clutch fully, move the gear lever to neutral, and pull the handbrake.

Driving a manual car may feel difficult at first, especially if you’re new to it. But with regular practice, you’ll build confidence and improve your skills. By following these steps from MotorGuide, you can learn how to drive a manual vehicle correctly and safely enjoy the road.
