The Police Media Spokesman, Deputy Inspector General of Police, stated that 793 cases have been filed regarding traffic violations through the security camera system installed in Colombo city during the period from the 1st to the 15th of last month, when case filing began. He also said that the task of identifying vehicle owners based on the numbers of vehicles caught by security cameras for road rule violations and issuing letters to their homes to enforce the law has been assigned to approximately 300 police stations. He further mentioned that currently, cases are being filed by checking security cameras only during selected time periods, and it is expected to be implemented 24 hours a day in the future.

Currently, 108 security cameras have been installed in 33 locations in Colombo city. The monitoring center for all these cameras is located within the building complex of the Deputy Inspector General of Police's office complex in Pettah, Colombo. Apart from this camera system, two camera-equipped vans have been deployed in cities across the island, and cases are currently being filed through them as well. This security camera system installed in Colombo city was established in 2010. After the installation of this camera system, drivers who violated road rules, observed through the cameras, were continuously brought to justice. What happened then was informing a traffic police officer stationed ahead of the number of the vehicle that violated the rules, leading to case filings or the issuance of fine tickets.

Accordingly, between December 29, 2010, and December 31, 2023, law has been enforced against one hundred fourteen thousand nine hundred eighty-two (114,982) drivers who committed violations observed by security cameras. Additionally, 66,512 road accidents were also observed through this camera system during this period, and cases have been filed against the drivers.
