Final Nissan R35 GT-R Rolls Off the Production Line

After nearly two decades and close to 48,000 cars built, Nissan has rolled out the final R35 GT-R from its Tochigi plant in Japan. The last example, a T-Spec edition finished in Midnight Purple, marks the end of an era for the brand’s most iconic performance car.

The R35’s farewell was widely expected. Reports of its discontinuation surfaced last year and were confirmed in March, when Nissan also revealed a global recovery plan aimed at stabilizing operations. As part of that strategy, the company has consolidated manufacturing facilities and placed a stronger focus on mainstream passenger cars, leaving the future of the GT-R uncertain for now.

Still, Nissan executives remain confident the GT-R name will return. Ivan Espinosa, Nissan’s CEO and president, told fans: “The GT-R is not a badge for just any car—it represents something truly special. The R35 raised the bar, and we intend to build on that legacy. While we cannot share concrete plans today, the GT-R will evolve and make a comeback.”

Record-Breaking Legacy

The R35 stands as the longest-running GT-R to date, with 18 years of production and a long list of achievements. It captured five Super GT GT500 titles, three GT300 championships, and even set a Guinness World Record for the fastest drift, sliding at an astonishing 304.96 km/h.

At the heart of every R35 was the hand-built VR38DETT twin-turbo V6. Across its lifetime, the engine received numerous upgrades, culminating in the Nismo version tuned to 592 hp—far above the 473 hp of the earliest cars.
