Many people think that exams end once school is over. But that’s not entirely true. To obtain a driving license in Sri Lanka, you must first pass a written test. This exam ensures that every driver understands traffic rules, road signs, and basic vehicle knowledge before getting behind the wheel. Today, MotorGuide shares the best tips and secrets to help you pass the driving license exam on your first attempt.

How Many Questions Are There?

The exam consists of 45 multiple-choice questions. However, the number of questions you must answer depends on the type of license:

  • Light vehicles (cars, motorcycles, etc.): You need to answer 40 questions.
  • Heavy vehicles (lorries, buses, etc.): You must answer all 45 questions.

For heavy vehicles, two extra requirements apply:

  • Your light vehicle license must be at least 2 years old.
  • You must be 21 years of age or older.

Driving License Exam Paper Layout

To prepare effectively, you need to know the structure of the question paper. The 45 questions are usually divided into four sections:

  • 20 questions on traffic signs
  • 10 questions on road markings
  • 10 questions on traffic rules and regulations
  • 5 questions on technical knowledge

Passing Score

  • Light vehicles: You must answer 40 questions, with at least 30 correct.
  • Heavy vehicles: You must answer 45 questions, with at least 35 correct.

If you fail, you can attempt the exam again — up to four chances are given.

Get Driving Guide Advice

Before attempting the exam, seek advice and guidance. If you register through a learner driving school, they will usually provide training and study materials. If you apply directly, you can prepare through online resources such as YouTube tutorials.

Additionally, there is an official driver’s manual available through learner schools and bookstores. This book contains all the information needed, including sample questions and answers.

Practice with Past Papers

Just like any other exam, practicing with past exam papers is one of the best ways to prepare. You can purchase these from bookstores or online. By practicing at least 5–6 past papers, you’ll get familiar with the style of questions, improve your speed, and reduce exam stress.

Learn Practically from the Road

You usually get about a week from registration to the exam date. During this time:

  • Observe road signs and markings when traveling.
  • Try to recall the rules you study whenever you see them in real life.
  • Practice safe driving habits to reinforce your knowledge practically.

Passing the driving license written exam in Sri Lanka is easy if you prepare properly. Focus on understanding traffic signs, rules, and vehicle basics. With consistent study, practice papers, and real-world observation, you can confidently pass the exam on your first attempt and become a safe, disciplined driver.
