Many think, “Checking a vehicle is such a hassle.” But today, with technology, you don't need to run around. You can easily check vehicle details online from home. That's why at MotorGuide, we'll explain how to get accurate vehicle information from the DMT App and the Department of Motor Traffic website.
Check Vehicle Details with the DMT App
The Department of Motor Traffic provides an official app called DMT. Currently, it is available only for Android users (not iOS). After downloading from the Play Store, the app shows three categories:
- Ongoing Number
- Vehicle Details
- Revenue License Status
Through these categories, you can quickly check vehicle information from anywhere.
Ongoing Number
By selecting this option, you can view all registered vehicle categories in Sri Lanka. Note that ATV models are not included here.
Vehicle Details
In this section, enter the vehicle registration number in the search bar. You'll get basic details such as:
- Engine Number
- Vehicle Class
- Make & Model
- Year of Manufacture
For more complete details, you must use the official website.
Revenue License Status
Here, by entering the registration number, you can check:
- License Number
- Issued Date
- Expiry Date
For additional information, the Department of Motor Traffic (DMT) website is required.
How to View Vehicle Details from the Website
The DMT app provides only limited information. To get full vehicle details, visit the official website: motortraffic.gov.lk.
Steps to follow:
- Log in to the website and choose your preferred language (Sinhala, English, Tamil).
- Go to the e-services section.
- Select Getting Information of a Registered Vehicle.
- Choose between limited information (same as the DMT app) or full information.
What Full Information Includes
- Current owner name & address
- Owner's absolute ownership status
- Engine number
- Vehicle class
- Conditions & notes
- Make & model
- Year of manufacture
- Date of registration
- Engine capacity (CC)
- Fuel type
- Condition when registered
- CR type
- Body type
The chassis number is not displayed online for legal reasons, as making it public may cause misuse.
Can You Check Vehicle Details for Free?
Yes. Limited information from the DMT app is free. However, if you want the full details from the website, you need to make a small online payment to the Department of Motor Traffic.
