New Driving Licence with QR Code

It is reported that the Department of Motor Traffic (DMT) has launched a project to issue driver's licenses with QR codes instead of the existing semiconductor chips.
According to media reports, Nishantha Anuruddha Weerasinghe, Commissioner General of the Department of Motor Traffic, stated that the project to introduce digital or smart driver's licenses commenced in October after receiving Cabinet approval.
He further mentioned that the printing process began on October 16, following the Sri Lanka Army handing over the responsibility of printing and issuing driver's licenses back to the Department of Motor Traffic.
Due to difficulties in importing chip reader units as a result of the economic crisis, it has been decided to include a QR code instead of a semiconductor chip. He added that a separate mobile application has been introduced for QR codes, which will be operated exclusively by the Department of Motor Traffic office and the Police Department.
Mr. Weerasinghe also said that a demerit point system for traffic offenses has been incorporated into the smart driver's license.
