Number of traffic cases caught on CCTV in the first two weeks of February increases

The Police Media Spokesperson, Deputy Inspector General (DIG), announced that 793 cases have been identified from the security camera system installed in Colombo City between the 1st and 15th of the month, based on traffic violations captured on camera.
Traffic Violations Captured Through CCTV
The DIG explained that the task of identifying the owners of the vehicles caught on camera and sending official letters to their residences to enforce legal action has been assigned to around 300 police stations across the country. Currently, cases are being initiated only during selected time periods, but the system is expected to be operated 24 hours a day in the near future.
Security Camera Network in Colombo
At present, there are 108 security cameras installed across 33 key locations in Colombo City. The central monitoring room for these cameras is located in the DIG’s office complex in Pettah, Colombo. In addition to these fixed cameras, two mobile camera vans have also been deployed to monitor traffic violations in cities across the island.
History of the Colombo Camera System
The Colombo security camera system was first installed in 2010. Since then, it has continuously captured drivers violating traffic rules. Once a violation is detected, the system alerts a traffic officer, who verifies the vehicle’s number plate before filing a case or issuing a fine against the driver.
Statistics Since Implementation
From December 29, 2010, to December 31, 2023, a total of 114,982 drivers were prosecuted based on footage from the camera system. During the same period, 66,512 traffic accidents were also observed through this surveillance network, resulting in legal action against the responsible drivers.
