Central Expressway : Road closure alert for Colombo – Kandy road

The Road Development Authority (RDA) has announced that construction of a bridge in the Bandarawatte area in Kadawatha, on the Colombo–Kandy main road, under the Central Expressway Project, will be carried out in two stages.
Police stated that the work will take place over a three-month period from today (01) until 31st January 2026.
During this time, the relevant road sections will be closed at night, and special traffic plans have been introduced to ease movement for motorists.
In the first one-and-a-half months, one lane of the two-lane carriageway in the Bandarawatte area, on the Colombo–to–Kandy direction, will be closed to traffic.
In the following one-and-a-half-month phase, construction will shift to the Kandy–to–Colombo side, during which one lane in that direction will be closed.
With one lane in each direction out of operation at different times, the road will function with reduced capacity, and heavy traffic delays are expected throughout the construction period.
Motorists using the Colombo–Kandy road during these months are therefore advised to opt for alternative routes whenever possible.
