When we buy a new vehicle, the first thing we get is the vehicle's key. This key is used for everything from starting the vehicle to unlocking its doors. Therefore, there are a few things you absolutely need to know about your car key. Think for a moment, are you truly knowledgeable about your car key? That's why MotorGuide tells you what you need to know about your car key.

Smart Key of a Vehicle

Modern vehicles today come with smart keys. Instead of a traditional key, smart keys that use a remote control have become a standard feature in new vehicles. Drivers can keep this smart key in their pocket to unlock, lock, and start the vehicle. If this smart key is lost, it will be very expensive to get a replacement.

How to know if the Smart Key battery is low?

If the key's battery is low, the vehicle might not lock. Therefore, the smart key's battery should be replaced when needed. In modern vehicles, when the smart key battery is low, it is indicated on the vehicle's dashboard. As soon as this is shown on the dashboard, you should get the key battery replaced by a knowledgeable person. This battery replacement should be done without causing any damage to the key.

What to do if the car locks with the key inside?

Generally, it's very rare for a smart key to be inside the vehicle when it locks. However, if the car locks with the key inside, there are a few ways you can unlock the car door.

  • If it's a smart key and you have a spare key at home, make a call, bring the phone close, and ask them to press the unlock button several times. Keys emit low hertz sound waves, so sometimes if the correct frequency is emitted from your phone's speaker, it might unlock.
  • Take a shoelace, insert the plastic tip of the lace through the door's lock, and entangle it well around the door opening mechanism. Then, using the lace, pull the door forcefully.
  • In addition to these methods, you can also open the door using a screwdriver. However, this needs to be done with some care. Because the screwdriver can cause damage to both the interior and exterior of the vehicle. What you need to do here is insert the screwdriver into the locked latch and push the latch with a small piece of wood. This way, the door can be opened easily.

What is the tag on the vehicle's key?

A vehicle's key has a small tag. Some people don't pay proper attention to this tag because they don't know its value. This tag contains a number related to the vehicle's key. If you lose your vehicle's key and have the number from the tag, you can easily get a suitable key for your vehicle. Otherwise, you'll have a lot of trouble getting a new key. So, you need to make sure to keep this tag safe.

What to do if the key is lost?

If a vehicle's key is lost, the first thing to do is inform someone related to the vehicle because a spare key might be at home or, if it's a financed vehicle, with the finance company. Then you can easily get it. Otherwise, inform a locksmith. They will use technical methods to open the vehicle's door without causing any damage. However, if your vehicle's key is lost, do not let people without vehicle-related knowledge perform this task, as it could damage the vehicle. Afterwards, they will prepare a new key. Also, remember to have the old key deactivated so it no longer operates the vehicle.

- Transponder key

Transponder keys are also known as chip keys. A transponder key refers to keys for vehicles that contain signal-emitting circuits designed inside. Transponder keys effectively protect vehicles from theft in two ways. Moreover, these transponder keys have become popular for modern motor vehicles.

- Internal cut key

In internal cut keys, the middle part of the blade's face is cut to a constant depth. These keys need to be made using special key cutting machines designed for them.

These are the things you need to know about your car key. So, from what we've told you, you should now have a good understanding of your vehicle's key.
