A new digital method of settling on-site fines for traffic violations has been launched in the Western Province and on expressways. The Ministry of Transport, Highways, Ports and Civil Aviation announced that motorists can now pay fines through the GoVpay mobile application.

Under the system, fines for 33 specified traffic offences can be paid online without any change to the fine amount. Authorities emphasize that the new method will save both time and additional service charges previously incurred when paying through post offices.

To support the rollout, traffic police officers have received specialized training in collaboration with the Ministry of Digital Affairs. In the first phase, 1,000 officers are being equipped with smartphones to facilitate the program. The initiative was fully implemented in the Western Province in early August and will gradually be expanded to other regions.

Meanwhile, the Ministry has already initiated a parallel program focusing on the Central, Uva, and Sabaragamuwa provinces, aimed at strengthening road safety and preparing for the wider adoption of digital fine payments.
