Qualifications You Need to Have to Get a Heavy Vehicle License

For most of us, getting a driving license at 18 is a dream come true. With a light vehicle license, you can drive cars, motorcycles, and vans. But if you want to drive larger vehicles such as buses and lorries, you must obtain a heavy vehicle license. Today, MotorGuide explains the qualifications and requirements you need to get one.
Two Ways to Get a Heavy Vehicle License
With the introduction of smart driving licenses, there are now two ways to apply:
- Online Method: Available at Werahera and district offices in Kurunegala, Kalutara, Hambantota, Gampaha (Negombo branch), Anuradhapura, Jaffna, Monaragala, and Kandy.
- Offline Method: Available at all other district offices.
General Requirements

- Motor tricycles and vans (unladen weight ≤500 kg, gross weight ≤1000 kg).
- Motor cars with up to 9 seats (including driver).
- Dual-purpose vehicles ≤3500 kg GVW, up to 9 seats (trailers ≤750 kg allowed).
