Today at MotorGuide, we're going to talk about an important part of your vehicle that directly affects both your comfort and health, yet often gets overlooked during routine maintenance. We're talking about your car's Air Conditioning (A/C) System and how to keep it clean while reducing the growth of bacteria, mould, and other harmful microorganisms.

With Sri Lanka's hot and humid weather, driving without air conditioning can be quite uncomfortable, especially during the daytime. However, have you ever noticed a strange or unpleasant smell when you switch on your car's A/C?

Sometimes, this smell can be musty, damp, or similar to the smell of accumulated dust and moisture. While there can be several reasons behind it, one common cause is the growth of bacteria and mould inside the A/C system.

So, why do these microorganisms develop inside your vehicle's air conditioning system? How can they affect the air you breathe, and what can you do to keep your A/C system clean? Let's take a closer look.

Car Air Conditioning System Cleaning

Why Do Bacteria and Mould Grow Inside a Car's A/C System?

To understand this problem, we first need to look at an important component of your vehicle's air conditioning system called the Evaporator Core, commonly known as the Cooling Coil or Cooling Box.

This component is usually located behind the dashboard and plays a major role in cooling the air that enters the passenger cabin.

When the air conditioning system is running, the evaporator becomes cold. As warm, humid air passes over its surface, moisture from the air condenses into tiny water droplets.

Under normal conditions, this water collects and flows out of the vehicle through the A/C drain pipe.

However, after you switch off the engine and air conditioning system, some moisture may remain on the evaporator and surrounding components.

Because this area is usually dark, enclosed, and sometimes damp, it can provide suitable conditions for bacteria, mould, and other microorganisms to grow, particularly when dust and dirt have accumulated.

How Can a Dirty A/C System Affect Your Health?

When you switch on the A/C blower, air passes through the ventilation system before entering the vehicle's cabin.

If mould, dust, or microbial contamination has accumulated inside the system, some airborne particles and allergens may be carried into the cabin along with the airflow.

Repeated exposure to these contaminants can cause discomfort, particularly for people who are sensitive to dust or mould.

Common symptoms may include sneezing, coughing, itchy eyes, and irritation of the nose or throat.

For people who already have conditions such as asthma or allergies, exposure to certain airborne contaminants may also trigger or worsen symptoms.

However, an unpleasant smell alone does not confirm the presence of dangerous bacteria or viruses. A proper inspection is needed to identify the source of the problem.

Fortunately, there are several practical steps you can take to reduce contamination and maintain better air quality inside your vehicle.

1. Replace the Cabin Air Filter Regularly

Car Cabin Air Filter Replacement

One of the most important components responsible for maintaining cleaner air inside your vehicle is the Cabin Air Filter.

This filter helps trap dust, pollen, and other airborne particles before they enter the passenger cabin through the ventilation system.

Instead of using a basic cabin filter, you can consider upgrading to an Activated Carbon or Charcoal Cabin Filter, provided it is compatible with your vehicle.

Activated carbon filters can help reduce certain unpleasant odours and gaseous pollutants while also filtering airborne particles.

Some vehicles may also support specialised high-efficiency filters, including HEPA-type filtration systems, which are designed to capture very small airborne particles.

However, not every vehicle can accommodate a genuine HEPA filter, and using an incompatible filter may restrict airflow through the A/C system.

As a general maintenance guideline, some cabin filters are replaced at intervals of around 10,000 kilometres, particularly in dusty environments. However, the correct replacement interval depends on the vehicle manufacturer, driving conditions, and filter type.

Regular inspection and timely replacement can help maintain proper airflow and improve cabin air quality.

2. Clean the Evaporator Using A/C Foam or Spray Treatment

If your car's A/C system already produces an unpleasant, musty smell, replacing the cabin filter alone may not solve the problem.

In such situations, the evaporator and surrounding air conditioning components may need a more thorough cleaning.

One commonly used method is Evaporator Foam or Spray Cleaning.

During this process, a suitable automotive A/C cleaning product is applied to the evaporator area according to the product and vehicle manufacturer's instructions.

Specialised cleaning foam can help loosen accumulated dirt and remove some of the microbial buildup responsible for unpleasant odours.

Depending on the product and cleaning procedure, the loosened contaminants and cleaning liquid may then drain out through the A/C drain pipe.

However, it is important to use only products specifically approved for automotive air conditioning systems. Incorrect chemicals or application methods may damage sensitive components or leave irritating residues inside the ventilation system.

For this reason, professional cleaning is recommended when contamination is severe or when the evaporator is difficult to access.

3. Ozone Treatment and Antimicrobial Misting

Some modern vehicle detailing and service centres offer treatments such as Ozone Treatment and Antimicrobial Misting to address persistent odours and microbial contamination.

Ozone (O3) is a highly reactive gas with strong oxidising properties. Specialised ozone generators can produce it for certain controlled treatment applications.

However, ozone can also irritate or damage the respiratory system when inhaled. It should not be used as a routine cabin air-cleaning method, and it cannot be relied upon to eliminate all bacteria and viruses safely.

Similarly, antimicrobial misting treatments should only be considered when the products are approved for the intended automotive use and applied according to their safety instructions.

These treatments should not replace proper cleaning of the evaporator, ventilation ducts, cabin filter, or drainage system.

If your car has a persistent A/C smell, identifying and removing the underlying source of moisture or contamination is usually more important than simply masking the odour.

A Simple Driving Habit That Can Help Reduce Moisture

Beyond regular maintenance, one of the easiest ways to reduce moisture buildup inside the A/C system is to make a small change to your daily driving routine.

About two or three minutes before reaching your destination, switch off the A/C cooling function while keeping the blower fan running.

In most vehicles, this can be done by pressing the A/C button while leaving the fan operating at a moderate or higher speed.

When the A/C cooling function is switched off, the compressor stops actively cooling the evaporator, while the continued airflow may help dry some of the moisture remaining on its surface.

This can make the environment inside the evaporator housing less favourable for mould and bacterial growth.

Although this habit may help reduce moisture and unpleasant odours, it does not guarantee that the evaporator will become completely dry or that all microorganisms will be eliminated.

Its effectiveness can also vary depending on the vehicle's air conditioning design, outside humidity, and operating conditions.

Don't Forget to Check the A/C Drain Pipe

At MotorGuide, one of our most important recommendations is to make sure your vehicle's A/C drain pipe remains clear and functions properly.

This pipe allows the water produced by condensation on the evaporator to flow safely out of the vehicle.

If the drain pipe becomes blocked with dirt or debris, water may begin collecting inside the evaporator housing instead of draining away.

Over time, this trapped moisture can encourage microbial growth and contribute to unpleasant smells inside the cabin.

In more serious cases, the accumulated water may overflow into the passenger compartment and soak the carpets or interior flooring.

If left untreated, this moisture can cause further damage to interior materials and create additional problems with mould and odours.

That's why it's a good idea to have the A/C drain system inspected during regular servicing, particularly if you notice water leaking inside the cabin or a persistent damp smell.

Keeping the cabin filter clean, checking the drainage system, maintaining the evaporator, and reducing unnecessary moisture buildup can all help keep your air conditioning system in better condition.

While no maintenance method can guarantee a completely bacteria-free A/C system forever, these simple steps can significantly reduce the conditions that allow contamination to develop.

With proper maintenance and a few good driving habits, you can enjoy a cleaner, more comfortable cabin environment while helping your vehicle's air conditioning system operate efficiently.
