One of the problems in our country is vehicle registration. Without registering a vehicle, you cannot drive or keep it legally. Therefore, it is mandatory to register the vehicle you have. When we go on the road, we see number plates with different numbers. Similarly, the same vehicle has different number plates. So you can't understand why, right? So today, MotorGuide, we are telling you how to register a vehicle exactly.

What does a number plate indicate?

New law passed to not integrate province in number plate

If a vehicle has a number plate of UP, it is Uva Province, if it has a number plate of WP, it is Western Province. So, in this way, two English letters are used in vehicle registration for all 9 provinces. But over time, one thing that can be seen is that unnecessary money is spent when vehicles are exchanged between provinces. That means, if a vehicle with a number plate of WP is brought to Uva Province and registered as UP in Uva Province, it is difficult to obtain the certificate. So the number plate shows the province in which the vehicle is registered.

What is the registration number?

The most important thing in identifying a vehicle is the registration number of the vehicle. Just as we use a name to identify someone, so does the registration number of this vehicle. So the registration number of the vehicle is the unique identification number of that vehicle.

Rules related to registration

The important rules related to motor vehicle registration are stated in Part I of the Motor Vehicles Act. According to that act, it is an offence to possess an unregistered vehicle. But it is not an offence to keep vehicles for sale. However, if those vehicles are transported, a certain number has to be obtained. That number is a temporary number. So such number plates can be seen in red color.

Do I need to use a number before registering a vehicle?

A vehicle is registered with the Commissioner of Motor Vehicles. If you have been given a number, you can get a number from the Commissioner of Motor Vehicles until the registration is received within the given time. Also, when a vehicle imported into Sri Lanka is taken to customs for certain inspections, it is not necessary to use a number.

How to register a vehicle?

When you register a motor vehicle, you need to fill out the relevant form and hand it over to the Commissioner of Motor Vehicles. Keeping a vehicle without registering it is a punishable offense. Therefore, you need to present the vehicle you have to the Commissioner of Motor Vehicles and register it.

What documents are given to know that the vehicle has been registered?

The Department of Motor Vehicles provides a document related to the registration of a vehicle. Previously, a book was given after registering a vehicle. Now, a paper is given after registering a vehicle. The paper received after registering a vehicle is called the CR of the vehicle. So this CR is how you know that your vehicle has been registered. It is important to check whether the wheel size and class of the vehicle are updated. Because some vehicles overlap with vehicle classes.

This is how a vehicle is registered. So, keeping a vehicle without registering it is a punishable offense by law.
