Do you know about Polestar? Polestar emerged as a Volvo racing division in 1995. But now, Polestar has detached from Volvo and started standalone EV manufacturing. The latest news is that Polestar is launching grid charging in Sweden and California. So, today we will tell you all the details about Polestar's grid charging launch through MotorGuide Weekly News.

Polestar has partnered with energy suppliers and others for a V2G project in Gothenburg, Sweden, using its latest electric SUV.

It is also working with the California Energy Commission and partners to investigate the development of V2G systems in California. These V2G systems rely on bi-directional charging, which means electric cars can both draw energy from the local grid and return it.

If implemented on a sufficiently large scale, the substantial energy storage capacity of thousands of EVs, after storing energy during peak periods, would play a major role in balancing energy across the grid.

EV owners with solar systems can also reduce their running costs by storing solar energy in their car battery during peak generation periods, instead of purchasing it from the network operator.

Bi-directional charging also allows you to power home appliances in the evening with the energy stored in your car battery. This is known as V2H (Vehicle-to-Home).

Polestar can charge the grid during off-peak periods. When tariffs are high, that energy can be used at home during peak periods.

Polestar is developing a virtual power plant (VPP) to connect the grid via a smart charger. The VPP can see the collective capacity of all connected vehicles and will initiate charging and discharging based on demand and battery optimization.

Ultimately, owners control the charging status of their battery and are paid a tariff for the energy their cars export. Similarly, you can already earn money from your solar system through export tariffs.

Until now, bi-directional charging was only possible with vehicles using the Chademo charging system. Accordingly, Nissan owners with 30 kWh batteries have been involved in the UK's Electric Nation Vehicle to Grid trial, conducted by Western Power Distribution for a year since 2021.

V2G was not included in the original standard for the CCS charging system, which is now practically used by all EVs. To rectify this, an ISO 15118 standard is under development, and it is reported that it is expected to be fully signed off in 2025.

This is the true story behind Polestar launching grid charging in Sweden and California. There are many more new stories about vehicles around the world that you might not know. So, stay with MotorGuide to learn every single detail about them.
