A vehicle's battery is like the oxygen we breathe — just as humans cannot live without oxygen, a vehicle cannot function without a battery. Unfortunately, many drivers only think about the battery when it starts showing problems. By then, it may already be too late, and sometimes a costly replacement is required. With rising vehicle part prices, proper car battery maintenance is more important than ever. That’s why MotorGuide is here to share essential tips to extend your battery life.

1. Limit the Number of Times You Start the Engine

Many people start their vehicle unnecessarily, even for very short distances. Frequent on-off cycles reduce not only the battery life but also the life of the starter motor. To protect your battery, avoid starting the engine repeatedly unless necessary.

2. Avoid Charging Electronic Devices Without the Engine Running

A common mistake is charging devices such as phones directly from the car battery while the engine is off. This drains battery power quickly and reduces its lifespan. Always ensure the engine is running before charging electronic devices in your vehicle.

3. Choose a Battery With the Right Capacity

Selecting the correct battery size is crucial for vehicle battery care. Installing a battery with the wrong capacity can shorten its lifespan. Here’s a quick guide:

  • For an 800cc engine → Battery with around 35Ah capacity
  • For a 1500cc engine → Battery with around 45Ah capacity
  • For diesel engines (1800cc – 2000cc) → Battery with 65Ah – 70Ah capacity
  • For vehicles over 2000cc → Battery with around 90Ah capacity

Always match the battery capacity to your vehicle’s engine size for optimal performance and durability.

4. Install the Battery Properly

Batteries should be securely mounted to resist shocks and vibrations from rough roads or sudden turns. Loose batteries may spark, which reduces battery life and can damage other components. Use a strong bracket to keep the battery stable and safe.

5. Perform Regular Battery Checks

Like any other part of a vehicle, batteries require routine checks. Here’s what you should do:

  • Check the battery’s voltage and the vehicle’s charging point at least once every three months.
  • Check and maintain the water level (for non-maintenance-free batteries).
  • If you don’t drive often, start the engine at least once every two weeks to keep the battery active.

Maintaining your car’s battery doesn’t require much effort, but it can save you from unnecessary costs and breakdowns. If you’ve been unknowingly making mistakes that shorten car battery life, correct them today. By following these MotorGuide battery care tips, you can enjoy a reliable battery that lasts longer and keeps your vehicle running smoothly.
