The vehicle registration certificate is the official document that records all the details about your vehicle. It is required when selling a vehicle, applying for a lease, or obtaining financial facilities by pledging the vehicle. In such cases, it is essential that the information in the certificate is accurate.

If you have recently changed your residence, or if the name recorded in the certificate is incorrect, you may face issues. Therefore, MotorGuide explains how to correct the name and address in your vehicle registration certificate step by step.

Required Documents

To make changes to the details in the vehicle registration certificate, you will need the following documents:

  • The original registration certificate that needs to be amended (or a copy certified by the leasing company if the vehicle is leased)
  • National Identity Card (NIC) and a photocopy
  • A residence certificate from the Grama Niladhari, if the new address differs from the one recorded
  • An affidavit confirming a name change (if applicable)
  • Birth certificate (in case of name clarification)
  • Tax payment receipts, if required

Where to Go?

Once you have prepared the necessary documents, you must visit the Department of Motor Traffic (DMT) in Narahenpita. At the office, you will be given an application form called CMT 72. Complete this form accurately without errors.

After completing the form:

  1. Submit the application together with all supporting documents at the counter.
  2. Take the receipt issued by the officer and proceed to the bank counter located inside the Department.
  3. Pay the required fee at the bank and collect the bank receipt.
  4. Return the bank receipt to the counter where you submitted your application.

If all documents are submitted correctly, the Department of Motor Traffic will process your request and provide you with a copy of the revised vehicle registration certificate without much delay.

Conclusion

Updating your vehicle registration certificate with the correct name and address is a straightforward process if you prepare the required documents properly. By following the steps outlined above, you can avoid unnecessary delays and ensure your vehicle documents remain valid and accurate.
