Do you own an electric vehicle? With a fully charged battery, you can enjoy smooth trips. But with rising economic challenges, many wonder: can you convert an electric vehicle to gasoline? And if so, what would be the impact on the vehicle? Today, MotorGuide explains whether EV to petrol conversion is possible and what risks come with it.

What Are Electric Vehicles?

Electric vehicles (EVs) range from cars and trucks to even large tractor-trailers, all powered at least partially by electricity. The main unit of any EV is its battery, which stores and delivers energy to the motor. EVs are generally divided into three categories:

  1. All-Electric Vehicle (AEV) – runs entirely on electricity
  2. Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) – combines an electric motor with a petrol engine
  3. Gasoline-powered cars – traditional vehicles running fully on fuel

How Can an EV Be Converted to Petrol?

Technically, it is possible to convert an EV into a petrol-powered vehicle, but it involves major modifications. The EV battery, which is extremely heavy, is typically mounted on the floorboard to balance the vehicle’s weight. To convert it:

  • The battery must be removed completely
  • The electric powertrain must be taken out
  • A petrol engine must be installed in its place

While this may sound straightforward, it drastically alters the engineering design of the vehicle.

What Happens to the Vehicle After Conversion?

Once an EV is converted to petrol, the entire balance and dynamics of the vehicle change. The battery plays a key role in managing the car’s weight distribution. Without it, the car may:

  • Lose stability and traction at higher speeds
  • Struggle with grip on different road conditions
  • Pose serious safety risks due to uneven weight balance

As a result, the vehicle may still run, but it will not deliver the intended performance or safety standards of a petrol-engine car designed by manufacturers.

Is It an Engineer-Approved Method?

No. Converting an electric vehicle to petrol is not an engineer-approved method. Vehicles are designed under strict engineering and safety guidelines, ensuring crash protection, weight balance, and fuel efficiency. Altering these systems compromises both driver and passenger safety as well as that of others on the road.

While converting an EV to petrol may seem like a temporary solution to fuel or battery concerns, it is neither practical nor safe. Such conversions often lead to serious safety risks, performance issues, and higher long-term costs. Instead of modifying an electric vehicle this way, it’s better to maintain the EV properly or consider a hybrid if you need both electric and petrol options.
