Lifespan of a Hybrid Battery

A big question for anyone using or planning to buy a hybrid vehicle is, "How long will the battery last?" Today, let's discuss this simply and with accurate facts.

Average Lifespan of a Battery

Generally, according to manufacturers and globally accepted data, a well-maintained hybrid battery can be used without any issues for a period of 8 to 10 years or a distance of 150,000 to 200,000 km. Also, depending on environmental conditions in Sri Lanka and usage patterns, this time could be shorter or longer.

Main Factors Determining Battery Lifespan

The lifespan of a hybrid battery depends on how you use it. The following factors directly affect it:

  • Excessive Heat: The biggest enemy of a battery is overheating. In a tropical country like Sri Lanka, parking the vehicle frequently in intense sunlight and the battery cooling system not functioning properly reduces the battery's lifespan rapidly.
  • Battery Cooling Fan: There is a special fan to keep the battery from overheating. If cobwebs or dust accumulate here, the battery will Overheat, and Cells will be destroyed quickly. Things like hair getting stuck in this fan is also a cause.
  • Leaving the Vehicle Unused: If a hybrid vehicle is left unused for weeks, the battery Voltage can drop, causing cells to fail. Driving at least 10-15 km once a week is very important for battery health.

How to Know if the Battery is Weakening?

When the battery is weakening, the vehicle gives us certain signals:

  • Reduced Fuel Efficiency: If a vehicle that used to do about 20 km per liter suddenly drops to the 12-15 range, it could be a battery problem.
  • Rapid Changes in Battery Indicator: This means the battery bars shown on the display fill up quickly and drop quickly (Rapid charging and discharging).
  • Engine Running Frequently: If the engine starts frequently even when the vehicle is stopped because the battery power is insufficient, it is a sign of a weakening battery.

What You Can Do to Extend Lifespan

To use your hybrid battery for a longer time, get a Hybrid Health Check done at every service. Especially, don't forget to clean the battery cooling fan and its filter. Also, it is very important to avoid placing bags or clothes in a way that blocks the Air Vents located near the battery (usually near the rear seat).

How Does a Battery Weaken?

Cell Imbalance

A hybrid battery consists of many small Cells with the same voltage. For example, a Toyota Aqua has about 20 cells. Over time, not every cell charges to the same level. When some cells weaken, the entire battery starts to heat up unusually. This is called "Imbalance." If this condition is identified early and "Conditioning" or "Balancing" is done, the battery can be used for some more time without completely replacing it.

Difference in Lifespan According to Battery Type

The nature of the battery changes according to the type of battery in your vehicle.

NiMH (Nickel-Metal Hydride)

These are mostly found in vehicles like Toyota Aqua, Prius, and Axio. These batteries are very strong but sensitive to overheating.

Li-ion (Lithium-ion)

New vehicles (like Vezel, Grace) come with this type. These are lighter and charge faster, but they have a higher tendency to fail suddenly when their lifespan ends.

Our Bad Habits That Shorten Battery Lifespan

Due to these things we do unknowingly, the battery can weaken quickly.

  • Keeping the Vehicle in "Neutral" (N): If you put the gear to 'N' while in traffic, the hybrid battery does not charge. However, since the AC is working at that time, the battery Discharges rapidly. This is very bad for the battery. Keeping it in 'D' or 'P' is always suitable.
  • Clothes of Passengers in the Rear Seat: The Air Intake for the hybrid battery is located on the side of the rear seat. Some people place clothes or bags blocking that hole. Then, without air flow to the battery, it overheats excessively within minutes.

Methods to Check Battery Lifespan

There are two ways to check the battery status of a vehicle you use or one you are planning to buy:

  • Scanner Check: You can go to a workshop and check the Delta Voltage of cells via a scanner. If the difference between cells is more than 0.2V, the battery has started to weaken.
  • Hybrid Assistant App: You can use an OBD2 adapter yourself and see the battery temperature and how cells are working from your phone.

Remember, a hybrid battery is a component that can be used for a long time if maintained, but incurs a huge cost if neglected. Replacing only one weak cell of a battery (Cell replacement) is only a temporary solution. Because when one weakens, the other cells are also near a weak level. Therefore, replacing the entire battery or doing a professional-level "Reconditioning" is beneficial in the long run.
