It is now the year 2026. We see Electric Vehicles (EVs) on Sri Lankan roads more than ever before. However, many people still make the mistake of maintaining these vehicles just like they would maintain standard combustion engine vehicles. That is a significant error. An EV is essentially like a massive smartphone on four wheels. As Motor Guide, these are the tips we offer you for EV maintenance Sri Lanka this year.

The "80/20 Rule" to Protect EV Battery Lifespan

About 60% of an EV's value lies inside its battery. Therefore, if you want to use this vehicle for 10 or 15 years, you must use the battery carefully. By 2026, the main advice we give for the batteries of many EVs on Sri Lankan roads is the "80/20 Rule." Do not drive the vehicle until the battery hits 0%, and do not charge it to 100% every day. Try to keep the battery level between 20% and 80% whenever possible. This significantly extends the electric car battery lifespan Sri Lanka drivers can expect. However, do not forget to charge it to 100% about once a month to allow for "Cell Balancing."

Be Mindful of Fast Charging and Heat

Now, there are DC Fast Chargers all around Sri Lanka. While this is convenient for urgent trips, frequently Fast Charging is not good for the battery because DC charging causes the battery to heat up significantly. Combined with Sri Lanka's tropical heat, this can damage the chemical composition of the battery. Whenever possible, use a standard AC charger (Slow charging) at home to charge at night. Also, avoid charging immediately after finishing a drive; let the battery cool down a bit before you start the process.

Thermal Management and Cooling System

An EV battery has a cooling system (Coolant System). Since there is no engine, many people neglect to check this. However, this coolant must be changed at the scheduled time. By 2026, with the dust levels in Sri Lanka, the vehicle's front radiator (Radiator/Condenser) can get covered in dirt. If that happens, the battery will not cool down properly. If the battery heats up, it "Degrades," meaning the Battery State of Health (SOH) drops rapidly. Therefore, ensure you clean this cooling system at least once a year to keep the EV service cost 2026 manageable and avoid expensive replacements.

Tires, Brakes, and Other Maintenance

An EV is heavier than a standard vehicle due to the battery weight. Therefore, it is valuable to use tires specifically designed for EVs. Also, since EVs have "Regenerative Braking," brake pads wear out less. However, because of this, brake calipers tend to rust or seize up due to lack of heavy use. Therefore, cleaning and greasing the brake system during a service is mandatory. Furthermore, even though there is no gearbox, the oil in the EV's "Reduction Gear" (Gear Oil) must be changed according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Motor Guide Advice

Remember, the SOH (State of Health) displayed on an EV's dashboard represents its value. If it is above 90% on the day you sell the vehicle, you can get a good price. Working with this technology in 2026, be mindful of Software Updates as well. New updates sent by the manufacturer often improve battery management significantly.
