Road Signs you must know

You should drive a vehicle on the road with great care. Because driving a vehicle carelessly increases the chances of accidents happening to you and other people on the road. So, considering the safety of all those traveling on the road, road signs have been posted on both sides of the road. A number of road signs are used in Sri Lanka.

Warning signs

  1. Left turn ahead
  2. Right turn ahead
  3. Double turn ahead
  4. Double turn ahead
  5. Four-way junction ahead
  6. Right elbow ahead
  7. Left elbow ahead
  8. Dual carriageway ends ahead
  9. Road starts to narrow on both sides ahead
  10. Narrow bridge ahead
  11. Two junctions ahead with side roads to the left and right
  12. Junctions ahead with side roads to the right and left
  13. T-shaped intersection ahead
  14. Y-shaped intersection ahead
  15. Stop ahead
  16. Left-hand junction ahead
  17. Right-hand junction ahead
  18. Give way ahead
  19. Roundabout ahead
  20. Traffic lights ahead
  21. Dangerous downhill slope ahead
  22. Dangerous uphill slope ahead
  23. Slippery road ahead
  24. Possible falling rocks ahead
  25. Road under repair ahead
  26. Pedestrian crossing ahead
  27. Children's crossing ahead
  28. Bus lane ahead
  29. Gated railway crossing ahead
  30. Unprotected railway crossing ahead
  31. Bicycle lane ahead
  32. Cattle ahead (Animals may cross the road)
  33. Cyclists may cross the road in front

Control signs

  1. Entry prohibited
  2. Left turn prohibited
  3. Right turn prohibited
  4. U-turn prohibited
  5. Overtaking prohibited
  6. Horn prohibited
  7. Road closed
  8. Road closed for buses
  9. Road closed for lorries
  10. Road closed for all vehicles
  11. Parking prohibited
  12. Parking and loading prohibited
  13. Parking prohibited on odd-numbered days
  14. Parking prohibited on even-numbered days

Command signs

  1. Turn left
  2. Turn right
  3. Go straight ahead
  4. Turn left ahead
  5. Turn right ahead
  6. Pass this way
  7. Roundabout

Priority signals

  1. Give way
  2. Stop
  3. Unguarded railway line ahead
  4. Priority road
  5. End of priority
  6. Priority must be given to vehicles coming from ahead
  7. Priority must be given to vehicles going ahead

Hand signals used by road officers

  1. Stop
  2. Proceed
  3. Vehicles coming from ahead and behind must stop
  4. Proceed
  5. Only vehicles coming from behind must stop

So these are the road signs that you must know if you are driving a vehicle in Sri Lanka. Don't forget to always avoid accidents and drive according to the law.
