For most of us, getting a driving license at 18 is a dream come true. With a light vehicle license, you can drive cars, motorcycles, and vans. But if you want to drive larger vehicles such as buses and lorries, you must obtain a heavy vehicle license. Today, MotorGuide explains the qualifications and requirements you need to get one.

Two Ways to Get a Heavy Vehicle License

With the introduction of smart driving licenses, there are now two ways to apply:

  • Online Method: Available at Werahera and district offices in Kurunegala, Kalutara, Hambantota, Gampaha (Negombo branch), Anuradhapura, Jaffna, Monaragala, and Kandy.
  • Offline Method: Available at all other district offices.

General Requirements

  • The applicant must appear in person.
  • Bring a valid National Identity Card (NIC) or passport with the NIC number.
  • For online offices, photos will be taken digitally during processing. For offline offices, bring two black and white passport-sized photos with a light background.

Qualifications for a Heavy Vehicle License

  • Must have held a light vehicle license (motorcycles, three-wheelers, or cars) for at least 2 years.
  • Minimum height:
    • 4 feet 10 inches for light motor buses and lorries.
    • 5 feet for heavy motor buses and lorries.
  • Must be at least 20 years old to register and sit for the written test.
  • If you pass the written test, you will receive a trainee permit valid for up to 18 months. Training must be done under an authorized instructor and a certificate of proficiency must be presented before the practical test.
  • A medical certificate from the National Transport Medical Institute, issued within the past 6 months, is required.
  • You must be at least 21 years old and hold the trainee permit for 3 months before applying for the practical test.
  • Exams:
    • Written test: maximum of 3 attempts.
    • Practical test: maximum of 4 attempts.
    • If you fail within these limits, your application will be cancelled.

Required Documents

  • National Identity Card or valid passport with NIC number.
  • Original birth certificate from the Registrar’s Division (photocopies, translations, or free copies are not accepted).
  • Medical certificate for heavy vehicles issued within the past 6 months.
  • For foreigners: valid passport and visa with at least 6 months validity.
  • Existing light vehicle driving license.

Vehicles You Can Drive with a Heavy Vehicle License

  • Light motorcycles (≤100cc) and motorcycles (>100cc).
  • Motor tricycles and vans (unladen weight ≤500 kg, gross weight ≤1000 kg).
  • Motor cars with up to 9 seats (including driver).
  • Dual-purpose vehicles ≤3500 kg GVW, up to 9 seats (trailers ≤750 kg allowed).
  • Light motor lorries.
  • Motor lorries between 3500–17,000 kg GVW (trailers ≤750 kg allowed).
  • Motor lorries above 17,000 kg GVW (trailers ≤750 kg allowed).

Getting a heavy vehicle license requires experience, medical fitness, and passing both written and practical exams. It opens the door to driving larger vehicles like buses and lorries, but the process is stricter than obtaining a light vehicle license. By meeting the qualifications and preparing properly, you can achieve this milestone with confidence.
