Buying a vehicle is never easy—it takes a huge investment and plenty of planning. But owning a vehicle doesn’t end with the purchase. A car is a long-term responsibility, and without proper care, even a brand-new vehicle can quickly run into problems. To help you protect your investment, MotorGuide brings you some essential vehicle maintenance tips every car owner should know.

1. Check the Spare Tire

One of the most overlooked parts of a car is the spare tire. Many drivers only remember it in an emergency—only to find it flat or unusable. To avoid this, make sure to check your spare tire at least once a month along with the air pressure of your regular tires. Keeping it in good condition ensures you won’t be stranded and forced to pay for a tow truck when you least expect it.

2. Change the Engine Oil

Skipping an oil change doesn’t just hurt your engine—it hurts your wallet too. Oil lubricates moving parts, reduces friction, and keeps your engine running smoothly. Always change the oil and oil filter on schedule, usually every 5,000 miles or as recommended by your manufacturer. Ignoring this can lead to costly repairs and reduced engine life.

3. Keep the Battery Clean

Over time, corrosion like white or blue powder can build up on battery terminals. If left unchecked, this buildup can damage the battery or even cause it to fail. Inspect your battery regularly, clean the terminals, and make sure connections are tight. A clean battery ensures strong starts and reliable performance.

4. Replace Brake Pads on Time

Your brakes are the most critical safety system in your vehicle. Worn-out brake pads can compromise stopping power and put you at risk of an accident. If you hear squeaking, grinding, or feel vibrations when braking, it’s time for a replacement. Regularly checking and replacing brake pads not only keeps you safe but also prevents damage to the rotors.

5. Replace the Cabin Air Filter

The cabin air filter keeps dust, pollen, and polluted air from entering your car’s interior. Over time, clogged filters reduce air quality and put extra strain on the air conditioning system. To maintain comfort and protect your AC, replace the cabin air filter every 12 months or 12,000 miles.

6. Switch to New Windshield Wipers

Windshield wipers are often neglected until it’s too late. Old, worn wipers won’t clear rain effectively, making driving in bad weather dangerous. Replace your wipers regularly—at least once a year—to ensure clear visibility and safe driving in all weather conditions.

7. Inspect the Suspension System

Your vehicle’s suspension system—shocks, springs, and struts—keeps your ride smooth and stable. Over time, these components wear out, leading to poor handling and increased stopping distances. Have your suspension system inspected every 15,000–30,000 miles to maintain ride quality and safety.

Proper vehicle maintenance is the key to safety, reliability, and long-term value. From oil changes to suspension checks, these tips will help you avoid expensive repairs and extend the life of your car. So, make it a habit to follow these MotorGuide maintenance tips and keep your vehicle in top condition.
