You probably know that your vehicle needs regular servicing—usually every 5,000 km or every 6 months, whichever comes first. But did you know that your car’s air conditioning (AC) system also has its own service interval? Today, MotorGuide explains how often you should service your AC and why it’s important.

How Does a Car AC Work?

The AC system in a vehicle is made up of several essential components that work together to provide cool air:

  • Refrigerant (the cooling gas)
  • Compressor (pressurizes and circulates refrigerant)
  • Condenser (cools the refrigerant)
  • Receiver (filters impurities)
  • Thermal expansion valve (controls refrigerant flow)
  • Evaporation coils (release cool air into the cabin)

When you switch on the AC, the refrigerant circulates through these parts, cooling the air before releasing it into your car’s cabin.

How Often Does the AC Need Re-Gassing?

On average, a car AC system needs to be re-gassed every 2 years. This is because 10%–15% of refrigerant gas naturally escapes through the system each year. Regular AC servicing helps prevent system faults, removes bacteria buildup, and eliminates unpleasant odors from the vents. Without timely servicing, bacteria and mold can accumulate, causing bad smells and potential health issues.

How Long Does It Take to Re-Gas the AC?

If your AC system is working without leaks or damage, a re-gas typically takes about 45 minutes. However, if there are leaks or mechanical faults, the process may take longer since the system needs to be inspected and repaired before recharging.

Why Is the AC Not Working?

The most common reason for AC failure is a lack of refrigerant gas. Other possible causes include:

  • A leak somewhere in the system
  • Compressor failure
  • Blocked filters or valves

In such cases, you should always consult a trained AC technician to diagnose and fix the issue properly.

Just like engine servicing, timely AC maintenance is essential for a comfortable and safe driving experience. By servicing your AC every two years, you can prevent breakdowns, maintain cooling efficiency, and enjoy a fresh, cool cabin on every drive.
