Hybrids Without a Starter Motor

Today at Motor Guide, we are discussing a highly talked-about and fascinatingly advanced technology in the automotive world today. That is the hybrid vehicle technology that starts the engine in a completely different way, without a separate Starter Motor like in conventional vehicles.

As professionals in this field, something we frequently notice is that the familiar sound of a starter motor, usually heard when starting an older vehicle, is completely absent in many modern hybrid vehicles today. Many people wonder how the engine even starts if there is no starter motor in these vehicles. But in reality, a completely different and wonderful technological process happens here.

The Traditional Starter Motor vs. Full Hybrids

First, let's look at what a traditional starter motor is. When a normal vehicle is started using a key, a small electric motor powered by the battery engages with the teeth of the engine's flywheel, turning the crankshaft to start the engine. However, if we take Full Hybrid vehicles like the Toyota Prius, it operates on a completely different concept. Those vehicles do not have a separate starter motor.

How the Engine Starts: Motor-Generators (MG1 & MG2)

The second important point is how the engine actually starts in these vehicles. Inside the gearbox of hybrid vehicles, or as a separate unit, there are two main electric motors. We call them Motor-Generators, or MG1 and MG2. One of these motors (specifically the MG1 motor) does the job of the starter motor. As soon as a signal is received from the vehicle's computer, this electric motor instantly operates using the high voltage from the hybrid battery, smoothly turning the engine's crankshaft to fire up the engine.

Incredible Advantages: Smooth and Silent

The third point is the incredible advantages of this method. With a normal starter motor, wear and tear occur because the teeth of the flywheel frequently clash. But in this hybrid method, since the motor spins based on a magnetic field without any physical gear clashing, no sound is heard. When the vehicle goes into Stop & Start mode in traffic, the engine turns off and restarts extremely smoothly without any jerking or noise.

Regenerative Braking

The fourth point is the special role of Regenerative Braking in this system. This motor-generator system can convert the rotational energy of the wheels back into electrical energy to charge the hybrid battery when the vehicle brakes or goes downhill. This means these motors have the ability to regenerate and store the exact same energy used to start the engine while the vehicle is running.

Hybrid Motor Generator System

Maintenance and Reliability

The fifth point is the special features of these vehicles in terms of maintenance. Many people fear that hybrid vehicles without starter motors will require massive and expensive repairs. But from a technical perspective, because there are fewer mechanical parts, issues like a burned-out starter motor simply do not occur here. However, the Inverter system that controls these electronic motors and the hybrid battery must be maintained very carefully. If the Cooling System does not work properly, these electronic components can be severely damaged.

Modern Hybrid Technology

Warning Signs to Watch Out For

As technicians, an important thing we must advise is that if there is any unusual delay when starting your hybrid vehicle, or if an SOS or Check Engine light illuminates on the dashboard, do not treat it as a normal occurrence. It means that some fault is emerging in the hybrid system or the inverter. Therefore, do not forget to take the vehicle to a service center with proper computer scanners and trained professionals in hybrid technology.

Motor Guide's Final Advice

Motor Guide's advice is that starter-motor-less hybrid technology is a wonderful invention perfectly suited for the future, providing maximum fuel efficiency. When you correctly understand how it operates, you can get the maximum benefit out of it. By constantly paying attention to the vehicle's coolant levels and the condition of the hybrid battery cooling fan, you can further increase the lifespan of these vehicles.
