Nowadays, many people are talking about hybrid vehicles. Specifically, there is both great curiosity and a slight fear in people's minds regarding the "battery system" of these vehicles. So today, let's discuss what this second generation hybrid battery technology is and how their prices behave in the market. From a mechanical perspective, this is something that can be understood quite simply.

First, remember that second-generation batteries are a huge leap forward compared to early hybrid vehicles. These have evolved significantly from Nickel-Metal Hydride (NiMH) technology or have shifted to Lithium-ion (Li-ion) technology. The specialty of second-generation batteries is their smaller size and ability to store more energy. This means these batteries help the vehicle run on electric power alone for a longer time. Vehicles like the Toyota Aqua and Prius (Gen 3/4) are very popular in Sri Lanka, and they come equipped with these highly advanced battery systems.

How is the Lifespan of a Battery Decided?

When talking about a battery, most people ask, "How long can this run?" Generally, second-generation batteries are designed to be used for about 8 to 10 years without any trouble. However, this depends entirely on how you use and maintain the vehicle.

The biggest enemy of a hybrid battery is heat. If the Cooling Fan designed to cool the battery is not cleaned properly, the battery heats up quickly, and the cells inside begin to weaken. Therefore, after buying a vehicle, it is very valuable to check its hybrid system at least once a year. Also, never let the battery drain completely. Leaving the vehicle unused for days is a major reason for the reduction in battery lifespan.

Battery Replacement, Options, and Prices

Now let's look at the options available if a battery fault occurs. Generally, installing a completely brand-new battery is a somewhat expensive task. In the current market, the hybrid battery price Sri Lanka for a Brand New unit can range from 4 Lakhs to 8-9 Lakhs (400,000 - 900,000 LKR). This varies according to the vehicle model. For example, while a new battery for a Toyota Aqua is between 4-5 Lakhs, it could be higher for a more luxury vehicle.

However, not everyone installs new batteries. Many people opt for Reconditioned or Used batteries. The hybrid battery replacement cost for these ranges from 1.5 Lakhs to 3 Lakhs (150,000 - 300,000 LKR). There is a slight risk here because we do not know how much that battery has been used previously. Another method is Cell Replacement. This involves removing only the weak cells in the battery pack and putting in new ones. This can be done for a sum between 50,000 and 100,000 LKR. However, remember that this is only a temporary solution.

Tips for Maintenance

If you are a hybrid vehicle user, keep these points in mind to protect your battery:

  • Keep the Cooling Fan Clean: Do not let dirt fill up the Air Vents located near the rear seat that draw in air. If these get blocked, the battery heats up quickly. Therefore, keep them clean.
  • Drive Carefully: Frequently stomping on the accelerator places a heavy load on the battery. Driving at a moderate speed is important for the battery's lifespan.
  • Avoid Long-term Parking: Start the vehicle and drive it for a short distance at least two or three times a week. This keeps the battery charged and maintains its functionality well.

Motor Guide Advice

Second-generation hybrid technology is extremely reliable. If you service it on time and have an understanding of the vehicle, you do not need to harbor unnecessary fear about the battery. Even if you have to replace a battery, there are plenty of expert technicians and spare parts available in Sri Lanka today. However, always ensure you get technical work of this nature done only at a trusted location.
