Tires are an essential part of a vehicle. We can never drive a vehicle without tires. However, to drive a vehicle, these tires need to be filled with the correct amount of air. A common question many people have is whether vehicle tires must be filled with nitrogen gas. MotorGuide is here today with the answer to your question. Because today we are discussing whether it's essential to fill your vehicle's tires with nitrogen gas.

Types of Gases that can be filled in Tires

There are two types of gases we can fill in tires.

Accordingly, we can fill tires with ordinary air and nitrogen gas.

What is Nitrogen Gas?

Nitrogen gas constitutes 78% of the volume of air in our natural environment. Nitrogen exists as a component element in organic matter like humus and in ammonium compounds. This nitrogen gas has several physical properties, which are:

  • Nitrogen gas has no color
  • No odor
  • Nitrogen is slightly soluble
  • It is slightly lighter than air

Applications of Nitrogen Gas.

  • Used in the production of chemical fertilizers.
  • Filling thermometers.
  • Filling vehicle tires.
  • Used as a super-cooling agent (cryogenic agent) in liquid nitrogen.

Is Ordinary Air Good for Tires?

The ordinary air we usually put into tires contains gases like nitrogen, oxygen, argon, and water vapor. Filling tires with this ordinary air, which contains water vapor and oxygen, can affect the rim. After filling tires with ordinary air, the oxygen gas in it gradually escapes. However, when exposed to sunlight, the oxygen in the air escapes quickly. Therefore, filling tires with ordinary air does not yield as successful results as filling them with nitrogen gas.

What are the Benefits of Nitrogen-Filled Tires?

Filling tires with nitrogen gas can provide more benefits than filling them with ordinary air.

  • Reduces the air refilling interval
  • Increases tire lifespan
  • Improves fuel efficiency
  • Enables better vehicle handling

Points to Consider When Filling with Nitrogen

There are a few things you need to consider before filling your vehicle's tires with nitrogen. If there is ordinary air inside the tire, it is not advisable to fill it with nitrogen gas directly. The ordinary air must be completely removed before filling with nitrogen gas. Also, you should be careful to fill your vehicle's tires only with the required amount of nitrogen gas.

Have you been filling your tires with ordinary air all this time? If you can, stop doing that today and get used to filling them with nitrogen gas to extend your tire's lifespan. If you do that, you can gain many benefits. Also, remember to pay attention to the points we discussed.
