With the current economic situation in Sri Lanka, vehicle prices have changed significantly. Especially due to fuel prices and vehicle import restrictions, there is a high demand as well as high prices in the Used Motorcycle market. Today, let's discuss the options available for a budget ranging from Rs. 1 Lakh to Rs. 10 Lakhs.

Rs. 1 Lakh to 3 Lakhs

Within this budget, buying a brand-new motorcycle these days is a bit difficult. For less than 3 Lakhs, you can primarily expect used Commuter Bikes for simple daily tasks and E-Bicycles.

Used Indian Bikes

You can find older manufacturing year bikes like Bajaj CT 100, Platina, or Discover (100cc/125cc) for this price.

High-end Electric Bikes

You can choose high-end electric motorcycles with longer Range and higher speeds in this price range.

Things to Consider When Buying a Bike

If you are buying a used bike, besides the price, you must definitely check these things:

  • Engine Condition: Check for any unusual noises and if it emits smoke.
  • Documents: Check if the Revenue License, Insurance, and Ownership Book are correct.
  • Mileage: How many kilometers the bike has run affects the engine's lifespan.
  • Tires and Battery: If these need to be replaced new, it could cost you an additional Rs. 30,000 - 50,000. So be mindful of that.

Although vehicle imports are restricted in Sri Lanka, recently, several New Models have entered the market through concessionary schemes and various methods. Especially now, the trend in Sri Lanka is towards Electric (EV) and bikes with fuel-efficient Fuel-Injection (FI) technology. Let's look at some of the newest models seen in the market these days.

Electric Motorcycles (The New EV Wave)

Several leading companies in Sri Lanka have introduced brand-new electric bikes. Their maintenance costs are very low. Among them are Tailg and Yadea. These are world-leading brands coming with Chinese technology. These days, models with various Ranges (distance per single charge) are available for prices from 4 to 8 Lakhs.

Vega Volt

This bike, Assembled in Sri Lanka, is now being talked about a lot. Its appearance and technology are at a very high level.

Sur-Ron / Talaria

If you like "Off-road" or "Stunt" style bikes a bit, new models of these are now seen in Sri Lanka. However, these are close to the 10 Lakhs limit.

Indian FI and ABS Models (The Updated Classics)

Indian companies are sending their old models with new technology (BS6 standard) to Sri Lanka.

TVS Raider 125

TVS Raider 125

This is now very popular among Sri Lankan youth. In terms of the Meter Panel (Digital Display), looks, and fuel efficiency, this bike ranks high. Its price is in the 7 - 9 Lakhs range.

Bajaj Pulsar N160 / N250

Bajaj Pulsar N160

These are now in the market with a completely different design from the old Pulsar and with Dual-Channel ABS safety system.

Suzuki V-Strom SX 250

Suzuki V-Strom SX 250

If you are someone who likes Touring, this is one of the newest "Adventure" bikes to arrive in Sri Lanka. Although this might be slightly over the 10 Lakhs limit, used ones can be found for that price.

The Modern Scooters

New technology has come to the scooter world too.

TVS NTORQ 125 (Race XP Edition)

This includes features like higher speed than a standard scooter and "Ride Modes".

Yamaha Ray ZR Hybrid

Scooters with Hybrid technology can now be seen on Sri Lankan roads. The specialty here is using electric power to assist during high pickup times.

Why Are These New Models Special?

  • Fuel Efficiency: Due to new FI (Fuel Injection) technology, they can run more kilometers per liter of fuel than old carburetor bikes.
  • Safety: Since many bikes now come with ABS (Anti-lock Braking System), you can brake safely even on slippery roads.
  • Technology: Many new bikes now have facilities to connect the phone via Bluetooth and view Navigation on the dashboard itself.
