Things to Consider Before Getting a License

We all live very busy lives these days, and vehicles make our work much easier. But before you can legally drive a vehicle on the road, you must have the proper documents. Among them, a valid driving license is essential. Today, MotorGuide explains the important things you need to consider before getting a license.
Consider Age
According to Sri Lankan law, you must be 18 years old to obtain a driving license. However, you can apply for a learner’s permit at the age of 17, which allows you to prepare for the test in advance.
How the License is Issued
According to the Department of Motor Traffic, licenses can now be obtained in two ways: online and offline.
- Online: Available at the Werahera head office and district offices in Kurunegala, Hambantota, Gampaha, Anuradhapura, Kalutara, Monaragala, and Jaffna.
- Offline: Available at all other district offices across the country.
Documents You Need
1. ID or Passport
You must present your original National ID or passport. Copies, police complaints, or temporary documents are not accepted.
2. Original Birth Certificate
The birth certificate must be an official version with a purple seal from the AG’s office. Free-issued or translated copies are not valid for license applications.
3. Medical Report
A medical report from the National Transport Medical Institute is required. This includes checks on eyesight, heart rate, and joint movement. If you have health concerns, consult a doctor beforehand.
4. Grama Sevaka Certificate
If the address on your license is different from the one on your ID, you must provide a Grama Sevaka Certificate confirming your residence.
For Light Vehicle Licenses
- You can apply for a learner’s permit at 17 years of age.
- A valid medical certificate (issued within 6 months) is required.
- The learner’s permit allows you to practice but is not a full license.
- You must complete at least 3 months of training before attempting the driving test.
- At 18 years of age, you can face the practical test to obtain a light vehicle license.
For Heavy Vehicle Licenses
- You must already hold a light vehicle license for at least 2 years.
- Minimum height: 4ft 10in for light buses/lorries and 5ft for larger buses/lorries.
- You must be 20 years old to sit for the written exam and 21 years old to obtain a heavy vehicle license.
- Passing a practical exam is mandatory.
- Special vehicles, such as container trucks, may require an additional special permit.
