What Are the Types of Vehicle Insurance?

If you spend even a single day on the road watching vehicles pass by, you’ll notice how many accidents occur. But the real question is — are all those vehicles properly insured? According to Sri Lankan law, vehicle insurance is mandatory before putting a vehicle on the road. Driving without insurance is not only illegal but also puts you at serious financial risk. Today, MotorGuide explains the types of vehicle insurance in Sri Lanka and how to choose the right one.
What is Motor Insurance?
Motor insurance is a policy that provides financial protection against damage caused to vehicles, drivers, passengers, third parties, and property in the event of an accident. Depending on the type of coverage, it may also include protection against fire, theft, and natural disasters.
Key Things to Know About Vehicle Insurance
- Policy ownership: The insurance must be in the name of the current owner of the vehicle. You cannot claim compensation under a policy taken by a previous owner.
- Insure at actual value: Always insure your vehicle at its current market value. If you insure for less, you will receive lower compensation. If you insure for more, you still only receive compensation based on the market value.
- Usage disclosure: You must inform the insurer about the purpose of the vehicle (personal use, passenger transport, goods transport, renting, or driver training). Compensation may be denied if you fail to declare the correct usage.
- Premium payment: If your insurer requires full payment within 60 days of the policy start date, ensure it is paid on time. Otherwise, your policy may be canceled without notice.
- Accident reporting: Report any accident immediately to your insurer and to the nearest police station, as required by the Traffic Ordinance.
Types of Vehicle Insurance in Sri Lanka
There are three main types of insurance available in Sri Lanka:
- Full Insurance (Comprehensive Insurance)
- Third Party Insurance
- Third Party Fire & Theft Insurance
1. Full Insurance (Comprehensive Insurance)
This is the most complete form of motor insurance. It covers:
- Damage to your own vehicle
- Injury or death of the driver and passengers
- Damage caused to third parties and their property
- Optional coverage for natural disasters like floods or riots
If your vehicle is leased or financed, full insurance is mandatory by law. Comprehensive cover is also recommended if:
- You own an expensive or luxury vehicle
- You drive 200–300 km daily
- Your vehicle is frequently used in high-traffic or high-risk areas
Types of full insurance based on usage:
- Private Use: For personal, everyday vehicles
- Hiring: For vehicles used to transport goods or passengers by a paid driver
- Rental: For rent-a-car and vehicle hire services
2. Third Party Insurance
This is the minimum legal requirement in Sri Lanka. It covers only the damages caused to third parties, such as:
- Injury or death of third parties
- Damage to third-party property
It does not cover your own vehicle or passengers. The main reasons people choose third party insurance are:
- Lower premiums compared to full insurance
- Legal compliance — you cannot drive without at least third party coverage
- Suitable for vehicles that are rarely used
3. Third Party Fire & Theft Insurance
This is a mid-level option that provides more protection than standard third party insurance but costs less than full insurance. It includes:
- All the coverage of third party insurance
- Fire damage cover: Compensation if your vehicle is damaged by fire
- Theft cover: Compensation if your vehicle is stolen
This option is ideal for older vehicles where full insurance may not be cost-effective, but owners still want protection against major risks such as fire or theft.
When choosing vehicle insurance in Sri Lanka, always consider your budget, vehicle type, and usage. If your vehicle is financed, full insurance is compulsory. If you only want to meet the minimum legal requirement, third party insurance is enough. For a balance between affordability and extra protection, third party fire & theft insurance is a smart choice.
