How to Identify Vehicle Faults by Observing Tyre Wear Patterns

Today we are going to discuss a very important topic. Many people think that a tyre wears out simply because the vehicle is being driven. However, looking at a vehicle's tyre can reveal a lot about the internal ailments of that vehicle. It is just like a doctor looking into a patient's eyes to diagnose an illness. If a tyre is wearing unevenly, it indicates a significant issue with your vehicle's Suspension or Alignment. This article covers tyre problem diagnosis to help you save money and stay safe.

Chart showing different tyre wear patterns and causes

Center Wear Only

First, let's look at wear that occurs only in the center of the tyre. If you notice that the sides of your vehicle's tyre are in good condition but the middle is worn down, it means you have over-inflated the tyre. When there is too much air, the tyre bulges in the middle like a balloon. Consequently, only the center part touches the road. This not only reduces the lifespan of the tyre but also decreases the Grip when applying the brakes.

Wear on Both Edges (Shoulders) but Center Remains

Conversely, if the center of the tyre is fine but both the inner and outer edges are worn, it means you are using the tyre with low air pressure (Under-inflation). When air is low, the tyre sags in the middle, shifting the entire weight to the two edges of the tyre. This is one of the main uneven tyre wear causes which leads to increased fuel consumption and causes the wheels to heat up, potentially leading to internal structural failure. Therefore, maintaining the manufacturer-recommended air pressure is extremely valuable.

One-Sided Wear (Inner or Outer Edge)

This is the most common issue seen in vehicles in Sri Lanka. If only the inner edge or only the outer edge of the tyre is wearing out, the primary reason is improper Wheel Alignment. Specifically, when measurements like "Camber" and "Toe" are off, the wheel stands at an angle on the road. This situation arises if you hit a large pothole or if suspension components like Bushes and Ball joints are worn out. With these tyre wear patterns explained, remember that if you do not fix this alignment issue before installing new tyres, the fresh rubber will also wear out within a few weeks.

Cupping or Scalloping (Patchy Wear)

If you run your hand over the tyre and feel dips, hills, or patch-like wear, it is a serious condition. We call this "Cupping." This happens when the vehicle's Shock Absorbers are weak. The shock absorber's job is to keep the wheel pressed firmly against the road. When the shock fails, the wheel starts to bounce on the road. That is when these uneven patches form on the tyre. This is also a cause for loud noise and vibration while driving.

Tyre Feathering

Another condition is called "Feathering." If the rubber blocks on the tread edge feel smooth when rubbing your hand one way and sharp or jagged when rubbing the other way, it indicates that the vehicle's "Toe-in" or "Toe-out" alignment is incorrect. This means the two wheels are either facing each other or splayed outward. Although this might not be visible to the naked eye, it can be felt distinctly by hand. This ailment causes the vehicle to pull to one side while driving.

Tyre Cracks and Expiration

It is not just about the wear; you must also check the condition of the rubber. If there are small cracks on the sidewall, it means the tyre is rotting due to age. Hardened rubber increases the risk of skidding. Furthermore, if there is a bulge in one spot on the tyre, it means the internal nylon or steel cords have broken (Impact Break). This is extremely dangerous as the tyre could blow out at any moment. Do not think twice about replacing such a tyre immediately.

Motor Guide Advice

A tyre is not just a rubber wheel; it is like your vehicle's health report. Make it a habit to look closely at all four tyres at least once a week when washing the vehicle or pumping air. As soon as you see uneven wear, go to an experienced technician to check the alignment and suspension. By doing so, you can save a large amount of money on tyre replacements and ensure your journey is safe.
