Many people mistakenly believe that the L permit is a temporary driving license. But that’s not correct. The L permit is actually a special license issued to untrained drivers to allow them to practice driving legally. That’s why today, MotorGuide is here to explain everything you need to know about the L permit.

Eligibility Requirements for Obtaining an L Permit

  • You must be over 17 years of age
  • You must have a valid Sri Lankan National Identity Card
  • You must present the original copy of your birth certificate
  • You must provide a medical certificate obtained within the last 3 months

How to Obtain an L Permit

To get an L permit, you need to visit the RMV office at your nearest Regional Registrar’s Office with all the required documents. Once there, you must complete the registration process. This can be done either by yourself or through a recognized learners.

After registration, you will be given a date for the written exam. Usually, the exam date is provided within a week of registration. If you pass this exam, the RMV will issue you your L permit.

Eligibility Requirements to Drive with an L Permit

  • You can only drive a private vehicle
  • The vehicle must have visible L boards on both the front and back
  • You must carry your L permit with you
  • A person over 21 years of age, with a valid license in the same vehicle category, must accompany you

Driving Rules After Getting the L Permit

Even after obtaining an L permit, you cannot drive alone (except for motorcycles). Specific conditions apply depending on the vehicle type:

  • Light vehicles: A licensed driver over 21 years of age must sit in the passenger seat.
  • Three-wheelers: A licensed driver must sit behind you while you drive.
  • Motorcycles: You are allowed to ride alone.

Displaying L Boards is Mandatory

If you are driving with an L permit, you must clearly display two L boards — one at the front and one at the rear of the vehicle. This is mandatory, regardless of the vehicle type. It helps police officers and other road users identify you as a learner driver.

What’s Next?

You will be given a trial date 90 days after receiving your L permit. This test determines whether you can qualify for a permanent driving license.

These are the key things you need to know about the L permit. Remember, the L permit is your first step toward becoming a responsible driver. Use this period to practice carefully, follow road rules, and prepare yourself to enter society as a disciplined driver.
