A vehicle's registration certificate (commonly known as the vehicle book) is one of the most important documents for any vehicle owner. If there are errors in the registration, it can cause major issues when selling or transferring ownership. That’s why it’s important to check your registration details carefully and get them corrected as soon as possible. At MotorGuide, we’ll guide you on how to update or change your vehicle’s registration properly in just one day.

Selling the Vehicle?

If you plan to sell your vehicle, you must correct any mistakes in the registration before the transfer. Collect all necessary documents, including:

  • Insurance certificates
  • Income certificate
  • Lease settlement letter (if the vehicle was leased and paid off)
  • Title transfer certificate

If you have problems regarding the transfer, you can call the government’s official support hotline 1919 or visit the Department of Motor Vehicles official website for guidance.

🔧 How to Change the Vehicle’s Registration

The vehicle book is the official registration certificate. To update or correct it:

  • Check if your name, address, or other details are printed correctly.
  • If your vehicle is under lease, you will have only the copy issued by the leasing company.

To request changes, bring the following documents to the Department of Motor Vehicles (Narahenpita):

  • Copy of your National Identity Card
  • Sworn petition confirming your residence (if the address is different)
  • Birth certificate (if making a name change)
  • Leasing company’s certified copy (if applicable)

Once there, you’ll need to:

  1. Fill out the relevant form provided at the DMV.
  2. Submit documents at the counter and collect the receipt.
  3. Pay the required fee at the bank counter inside the DMV.
  4. Return with the payment receipt to complete the process.

After verification, the DMV will update your records and issue a new corrected copy of the vehicle book on the same day.

How to Increase the Value of the Vehicle

  • Repair any damages before selling to make the vehicle more appealing.
  • Maintain and show a complete service history with receipts to increase buyer confidence.

🚗 If You Are Buying a Vehicle

When buying a vehicle, always check the vehicle book thoroughly. Don’t just look at the owner’s name and year of manufacture. Pay attention to:

  • The list of previous owners
  • If an insurance company appears as a past owner, be cautious. Insurance companies often resell accident-repaired vehicles that may not be properly restored.

Chassis Number Check

Always confirm that the chassis number on the vehicle matches the one in the registration book. If there’s a mismatch, immediately contact the Department of Motor Vehicles to get it corrected.

Updating or correcting your vehicle’s registration is straightforward if you prepare the right documents. Whether you are selling your car or transferring ownership, following these steps ensures you won’t run into trouble later. By correcting errors, keeping service records, and checking ownership details, you can buy or sell a vehicle with complete confidence.
