Lane Departure Warning and Lane Keep Assist for Driver Convenience

Two very important technological features for our safety in vehicles today are Lane Departure Warning (LDW) and Lane Keep Assist (LKA). Both of these work to prevent the vehicle from drifting off the road by missing the lane we are driving in.

Also, these two systems provide great strength in preventing fatal accidents that can happen due to driver fatigue or a momentary lapse in concentration.

Lane Departure Warning (LDW)

First, looking at Lane Departure Warning (LDW), its main function is to inform the driver. A camera mounted at the top of the vehicle's Windshield constantly monitors the system of white or yellow lines drawn on the road. If the system understands that the vehicle is drifting out of the lane without you signaling, it immediately alerts you via a sound (Beep sound), an image on the dashboard, or vibration of the steering wheel. Here, the driver controls the vehicle. The system only reminds about the danger.

Lane Keep Assist (LKA)

The next step is Lane Keep Assist (LKA). This is slightly more advanced than the LDW system. Here, the system not only gives a warning but actively intervenes to prevent the vehicle from going off the road. If the driver does not respond, the vehicle's computer system tries to bring the vehicle back to the center of the lane by slightly turning the Steering wheel. In some vehicles, this is done by using the brake system on one side to bring the vehicle onto the correct path.

The operation of both these technologies depends on the lane markings being clearly visible. If the road lines are faded, or if the camera is covered by heavy rain or mud, these systems might not function correctly. Also, if you change lanes intentionally (by putting on the signal), the system does not intervene.

In summary, LDW is a system that shows you the danger like an "eye," while LKA is a system that helps control the vehicle like a "hand."

Maintenance of Advanced Safety Systems

These advanced safety systems in a vehicle (BSM, LKA, ACC) are a collection of extremely sensitive electronic components. For these to work correctly, there are several factors we need to pay special attention to.

Main Points Important in Maintenance

1. Keeping Sensors and Cameras Clean

The "eyes" of these systems are cameras and radar sensors.

  • Front Camera: The area where the camera is located at the top center of the Windshield must always be clean. If mud, dust, or the wiper does not wipe properly, it becomes difficult for the system to identify road lines.
  • Radar Sensors: Do not allow layers of mud or thick dust to accumulate on the radars inside the rear bumper for BSM and on the radar in the front grill for ACC. It is important to clean these places gently when washing the vehicle.
2. Glass and Bumper Repair

If your vehicle's front glass (Windshield) cracks or if you are installing a new one, you must definitely use a glass of the specified standard for it. Because the camera sees the road through that glass. Also, if the bumper is damaged or if you are painting the bumper, expert knowledge is required to do that job without obstructing radar waves.

3. Wheel Alignment

For systems like Lane Keep Assist to work correctly, the vehicle's Wheel Alignment must be exact. If wheels are not aligned properly, the vehicle pulls in a direction other than what the system thinks. Therefore, every time Alignment is checked, it should be checked if it matches these systems (Calibration).

4. System Calibration

If the vehicle meets with an accident, if a bumper is removed and reattached, or if the windshield is replaced, the system must definitely be Recalibrated. That means readjusting via computer software to see if the angles the cameras and sensors are looking at are correct. This can only be done by a modern garage with facilities or through the agent.

5. Software Updates

In modern vehicles, these systems are controlled by software. The manufacturer might send new Updates from time to time correcting errors in these. It is very valuable to check if the system's software needs to be updated when you go for a service.

Remember: If any Warning light related to these systems lights up on the dashboard, do not ignore it. That means there could be a sensor fault or mud covering it.
