Previously, the driving license was valid for a lifetime. But after 2009, every driving license has to be renewed every 8 years. Although this is a bit of a hassle, according to the law of Sri Lanka, if you want to drive a vehicle on the road, you must have a valid driving license.

But now you can easily renew your driving license without having to wait in line like before. Today, we at MotorGuide are telling you about it.

Required documents

Many people have the misconception that when you want to renew a driving license, you need a Grama Niladhari certificate, a passport size photo, and a birth certificate. But with the new method that I am going to tell you today, we do not need any of these things. To renew our driving license, we need,

  • An expired driving license
  • A valid, clear national identity card or foreign passport to verify identity
  • From the National Institute of Transport Medicine Medical certificate of fitness obtained within 6 months

Where should we go?

There are two main institutions that we need to go to in order to renew our driving license. First, we need to go to the National Transport Medical Institute to get the medical report. Second, we need to go to the Department of Motor Transport or a district office of the Department of Motor Transport with the medical we have obtained, the old driving license and the national identity card.

Get the medical

The best way to get the medical required to renew your driving license is to go to the nearest national transport medical institute. But if you make an online appointment before going there, you can get the job done quickly without any hassle. Also, before getting the medical, you should generally pay more attention to your eyesight, heart rate level and the function of your fingers and knees. If you have any questions about those things, the doctor It is very good if you appear for it under someone's pre-conception. Then you can get the medical report without any difficulty.

After taking the medical

After taking the medical, the next thing you need to do is take the medical report, old driver's license, national identity card or passport to verify your identity and go to the nearest District Motor Department office and renew your driver's license. You will not need to take appointments to get a driver's license like before. You can get more information from the nearest District Motor Department office.

You can get details about the nearest District Motor Department office through the link below.

After going to the Motor Vehicles Department office

Let's now see what to do after going to the Motor Vehicles Department office. This usually requires a little bit of waiting in line. But after about 2 hours, you can get your new driving license in your hands after all the work is done. You need to go to three counters to renew your driving license.

First Counter One

When you go to the first counter, you need to present your medical, old driving license and national identity card. After that, your photo, finger print and signature will be taken. After that, a printed application form with your photo will be given to you from there. The application form you get has 6 sections a, b, c, d, e and f. After filling this form correctly, you can go to the second counter.

Second and third counters

At the second counter, your details will be computerized. Then you need to go to the account section. This is where you need to pay for the new license you are getting for the expired license. After paying the money, your old driving license will be punched. After that, a new driving license will be given in your name. However, due to the shortage of cards these days, the driving license is printed on an A4 size sheet. It is valid for a period of one year.
